Lindsay with Lindsay Palmer Photography
When her husband accepted a job at USD last fall, Lindsay and her family began looking for a home in the area. “While we were hesitant to consider a location that involved a commute for him, we found a property just north of Yankton that we fell in love with and decided to make it our home,” she shared. “We wanted a property with some space and a country feel, and that’s exactly what we found in a wooded development overlooking the Jim River.”
“I was born and raised in central South Dakota and studied elementary education at Wartburg College in Iowa. I was an elementary teacher for six years prior to our son being born, at which time I made the transition to stay-at-home mom.”
Moving to Yankton provided Lindsay the perfect opportunity to open her dream business as a newborn photographer. “I studied newborn photography and finally had the perfect studio space in our home with gorgeous natural light. Shortly after moving in, I began setting up my studio, and I welcomed the first baby into the studio a few months later.”
Lindsay specializes in newborn portraiture. She photographs infants in their first two weeks of life in a calm environment and makes safety the top priority. Lindsay creates custom designed artwork for her clients’ homes so they can relive the emotions of their baby’s first moments.
“I like to spend time outdoors with my family. When I’m not photographing newborns or my own family, I like to capture the beauty of South Dakota. Yankton provides ample opportunities for nature photography.” Lindsay’s recent submission to SDPB’s Picture South Dakota contest was taken at her home north of Yankton and received the 2017 Director’s Choice award.
Most of Lindsay’s time outside the home involves play dates and visits to local parks and the library. “The library has wonderful kids’ programs. My son loves going to Story Time every week. They have the perfect mix of stories, activities, and play. It has been a great way to meet people, and I value the opportunity for my son to interact with other children his age in an educational environment.”
“I feel so welcomed by the community,” Lindsay shared. “I found several local businesses that were happy to work with me in marketing my photography studio. I sense that there is a strong local business community in which everyone wants to see everyone succeed. It’s been very encouraging as a new business owner.”
While she hasn’t had the opportunity to enjoy a summer in Yankton, Lindsay is looking forward to exploring the outdoor recreation activities. As former sailboat owners, she and her husband would love to get involved in the local sailboat community and get back on the water. “Now that spring is here, we can’t wait to get out and really take in all that Yankton has to offer.”
